Did you know that International Peace Day is this week?

Probably not. I sure didn’t until I was hired to do some writing for a week-long celebration going on at Concordia University here in Portland. The UN created International Peace Day (not to be confused with equally-popular Disarmament Week – send your honey a Hallmark card pledging to disarm!) and it’s not an official U.S. holiday. Still, events around the world will celebrate the day and I’d like to think there are a lot of people who are counting down to the “festivities” as if IPD were the new Christmas or Valentine’s Day.

With that in mind, only a real jerk would say they were against Peace Day. I gotta say though, I’m not that into it. A day for peace? Sure. But what are we supposed to do? Hold hands and heal the world?

To their credit, the people at Concordia have put together a week of events centered around resolving the conflict between North Korea and South Korea. I’ve always been fascinated by North Korea and its secret Stalinist regime. The people of North Korea are literally starving to death because of their government’s delusions and yet they still rigorously defend their government and succumb to its propaganda.

That picture is composed of thousands of North Korean school schildren alternating colored boards in unison. The occaion was the semi-regular Mass Games, a celebration of just how awesome North Korea is.

If you’re at all interested in North Korea’s bizzaro Cold War-world, I highly recommend the fascinating documentary A State of Mind (currently available on Netflix Watch Instantly). The journalists who made it had unprecedented access to explore North Korea and talk to some citizens. The result is hypnotic. Also enjoyable and fascinating (if slightly less journalistically rigorous) is Vice TV’s Travel Guide to North Korea. The hour-long doc follows two Vice editors as they bribe their way into North Korea and then get a lavish behind-the-scenes tour of the country with escorts fervently watching their every step and trying to make sure they don’t see too much.

The keynote speaker for the Concordia event is the wife of the former South Korean president. Initially they were going to have the president of North Korea’s leading university, but I don’t see him listed anymore.

Regardless, it could be an interesting event.
